Increasing use of social media and mobile devices lead to the accumulation of more evidence about happenings. The patterns that can be extracted from social media are useful in various domains including traffic and disaster management. In this talk, firstly I will talk about event detection and location estimation from social media. Then I will present a recent work in which we model the problem of online event detection in microblogs as a stateful stream processing problem and offer a novel solution that balances result accuracy and performance.
