Reading

Ramakrishnan and Gehrke: Chapter 1 and 2 (you can skip 2.7 and 2.8).

Remarks

Our introduction slides do not discuss exactly the same subjects as Chapter 1. Also, due to lack of time, we did not cover all of Chapter 2.1 to 2.6. The rest will be done next time.

The first exercise classes take place September 14/16.

Lecture September 14 (expected contents)

Relational model. Transfer from E/R-model to relational model. Relational algebra.

Reading

Ramakrishnan and Gehrke: Most of Chapter 3. Sections 4.1-2. Note: we will not focus on SQL yet (contrary to the textbook).

Exercises September 14 and 16

Exercises 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, and (if time permits) 2.6 in Ramakrishnan and Gehrke. (Note: in order to do 2.2 through 2.6, you should read up to and including Section 2.5, even though a bit of it was not covered at the lecture September 7. The rest will be covered September 14).
