DM26, Fall 2005 - Weekly Note 8
As mentioned on Weekly Note 4, all teaching on Wednesday, November 9, is cancelled due to Studievalgsdagen. This affects the lectures and one of the exercise classes, which both are cancelled. The Friday exercise classes will therefore catch up from their previous cancellation. Chapter 9 on data storage is rather simple, and is left for your own reading (a short recap will be done at the lectures). Note that all exercises on this weekly note are from Chapter 9.
Lecture November 2Even more on normal forms: Minimal cover, dependency preserving decomposition into 3NF.
ReadingRamakrishnan and Gehrke: Rest of Chapter 19 up to and including 19.7 (so you can skip 19.8 and 19.9).
RemarksDue to time restrictions, we will skip all of 19.8 (even though 19.8.1-2 previously was announced for reading).
Lecture November 16 (Expected Contents)Start on second part of the course (DBMS implementation): Storage and indexing.
ReadingRamakrishnan and Gehrke: Chapters 8-10 (of which Chapter 9 is mainly left for your own reading).
Exercises November 16/18Exercises 9.2, 9.4, 9.5, 9.6 (only question 5 and 6), 9.7, 9.9, 9.11, 9.12, 9.13, 9.14 in Ramakrishnan and Gehrke.
